A Thanksgiving Heart

11.01.25 | Articles, The Shepherd's Voice | by Don Treglown

Years ago, we invited several families to gather together for the celebration of Thanksgiving.  We asked each of the families (all missionaries) to bring one of their family traditions to share with the group as we gathered around for the Thanksgiving Feast.

    1. Bob & Penny Selle from Poy Sippi, Wisconsin shared the idea of returning thanks after the meal. When everyone is finished, you hold hands and share together the words of 1 Chronicles 16:34:

“O , Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good: His love endures forever.”

    1. Todd and Kim Roeske from Ft.Wayne, Indiana talked about taking time to focus on each other and get quiet before the Lord.   Psalm 46:10 was one of their favorite verses.  They shared how important it is to be “still before the Lord.”
    2. Bruce and Amy Lesemann  from  Edwardsville, Illinois lead us in prayer reminding us of the gratitude we have to a Lord and Savior who lived, died, and rose again so that we might live. In going to Jesus in prayer at Thanksgiving and every day, giving Him thanks and praise, we begin to fill that void in our hearts that only He can fill.
    3. Edwino Mercado and Belva from Davao City, Philippines led us in worship and praise in songs to the Lord.  I’ll tell you that there is something about music that targets both my heart and soul.  It is especially meangingful when it comes from the language of your heart.
    4. Don & Jo Treglown  from Farmington, Michigan wanted to have a traditional Thanksgiving meal even though we did serve a bowl of rice.  We wanted to keep it simple. So we raised the Turkey ourselves, had relatives send us cranberry sauce/corned bread stuffing/and pumpkin pie mix, and made the decorations by hand.   All this activity, helped us pause and reflect on what is truly important and that is giving thanks to the Lord.

This Thanksgiving, it is so easy to lose our focus this time of year and begin getting swept away the hustle and bustle of it all.  I would encourage each of us to be intentional with our time by gauging our attitude, perspective, and responses.  Let us have the practice of keeping “our eyes  focused on Jesus”.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”  Colossians 3:15
