The Sights of Christmas

The Sights of Christmas at Faith

It always thrills me to point out the different sights you see in the Sanctuary during Advent and Christmas here at Faith Lutheran Church.  Here are just a few of the items that you will see:

    1. Advent Wreath   You will see a circular candle holder near the altar decorated with evergreens, banners, and candles. During the season of Advent one candle on the wreath is lit each Sunday until all the candles, including the Christ candle are lit.  The purple candles represent the Hope, Peace, and Love that are found in the birth of Jesus Christ.   The pink candle represents Joy in the Lord. Finally, the white candle reminds us that Jesus is the spotless lamb of God.

Colors to look for:   Purple, Blue, Pink, Red, Green, and Black

    1. Christmas Trees   We can thank Martin Luther for the tradition of Christmas Trees.   Not only did he set a fir tree (Think O Tannenbaum) up in his home in 1536 but he also set up the tree with candles to remind his children of the starry heavens from whence the Savior came.

Colors to look for:  Green, Red, White, Gold, Silver

    1.   Chrismons  These are what decorates our trees here at Faith.  Chrismons, meaning “Christ Monograms” traditionally are white and gold designs made from Christian symbols that point to Christ.   Did you know that Chrismons were first developed in 1957 by the women of Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, VA.

Colors to look for:  White and Gold

And now for my favorite Sight of Christmas:

    1. People  When I see people visit, worship, connect at Faith is reminds me of what Christmas and Faith Lutheran Church are all about.   We are people who are called out of the world into a relationship with Jesus Christ.   When Jesus said, “I will build my Church” in Matthew 16:18 He wasn’t talking about constructing a building, decorations, or hanging of the greens.  He was talking about creating a world wife body of believers

Colors to look for:  All Shades, All Combinations, All Colors

I invite you all to “Come and See the Newborn King – Jesus Christ!”

Looking forward to seeing you this Christmas,

    Pastor Don Treglown
